Student Suspended for Cellphone Call From Mom in Iraq

So basically the High School student gets suspended for using a cellphone during lunch. The school’s policy is that you can’t use a cell phone during the school time

A high school junior in a central Georgia military town was suspended from school this week after refusing to end a long-distance cellphone call from his mother, an Army sergeant serving in Iraq.

Kevin Francois, a 17-year-old student at Spencer High School in Columbus, Ga., was in the school cafeteria Wednesday when his mother, Sgt. 1st Class Monique Bates, called to check in with him. When Francois went outside to get better reception, he was spotted by a teacher who — citing a district policy against cellphone use during school hours — told him to hang up.

Francois refused and was suspended for 10 days for disorderly conduct.

“I think I was right by not hanging up my phone,” Francois said in a phone interview Friday

They was both wrong! I’m pretty sure the student was very emotional when confronted by the teacher. If he would of gently explain to the teacher who he was talking too it could of ended right there. This is a minor incident and the school of should have been able to handle this much much better

    Greetings Anonymous blogger.

You have left a “trackpack” ping on my Vista On Current Events post “Student Suspended: Refused to Hangup on Mom in Iraq,” but the trackback is improperly done. Normally I would contact you by email but neither of your contact links are valid.

You have only been blogging for about a week and a half, so I understand your confusion. Otherwise I would normally just delete your trackback with no comment, or one about bad trackback etiquette.

There are two links involved in a trackback. One, the permalink, goes into your post were you indicate the blog name or author your linking to. This is the etiquette part and you should always include name or blog. Also you used my trackback link (or URI) instead of the permalink.

The other link is the trackback ping (URI), and is the one that you put into WordPress to trackback to another blog. Not being familiar with Wordpress I can’t tell you the proper method, but several bloggers I know using WordPress are complaining that it doen’t work right.

On the other hand, I am quite fond of PowerBlogs which is a whole lot simpler and easy to use compared to WordPress, Blogger (which I used to use) or TypePad. Their $5 a month package is more than enough for the first year or two for most blogs.

You can reach me at blogmail@charter.net if you want to discuss it further.

    Cordially, Sandi
