The personal doctor to late Canadian pro wrestler Chris Benoit has pleaded not guilty to a new 175-count indictment charging him with conspiracy and improperly dispensing drugs.Dr. Phil Astin did not attend Monday’s hearing in U.S. federal court in Atlanta. His lawyer, who entered the plea, says in a statement that Astin is not a criminal.
The May indictment replaces a seven-count indictment last July and involves 17 patients.
Astin was the personal physician of Benoit, who strangled his wife and seven-year-old son before hanging himself at the family’s home in an Atlanta suburb in June 2007.
Authorities say Astin prescribed anabolic steroids for Benoit. However, a medical examiner was unable to say if steroids, which have been linked to so-called ‘roid rage,’ played a role in the killings.
Benoit was born in Montreal and grew up in Edmonton. He began his career in 1985, training with wrestling’s Hart family in Calgary.
A search to secure a long-term title sponsor for future events failed, leaving Atlanta Classic Foundation with the bad news on Monday – it will no longer host a PGA Tour event.
The announcement was a blow to the foundation and to Gwinnett, which had hosted an annual PGA Tour stop at Duluth’s TPC at Sugarloaf since 1997. Before moving to Gwinnett, Atlanta Country Club had hosted the Atlanta Classic’s PGA event since 1967.
But AT&T dropped its title sponsorship after last month’s AT&T Classic, forcing tournament officials to find a new sponsor or face the dire consequences. That’s exactly what happened and Atlanta’s only PGA stop now will be the season-ending Tour Championship at East Lake Golf Club. Read on
Caleb King’s scouting report states he’s the 3rd ranking running back in the nation.
At about 9:40 a.m., standing behind a podium and in front of hundreds of students, teachers, family and media members at the Greater Atlanta Christian Family Center, star running back Caleb King uttered the words that football fans from around the state had been longing to hear.
“After much thought and prayer,” King read from a prepared statement, “I have decided to wear red and black and become a Georgia Bulldog.”
The room erupted in applause as King placed a UGA hat on his head and smiled for the cameras. It was fitting that the cap was provided by Jill Southerland, who works in the school store and is the mother of starting Georgia fullback Brannan Southerland, since the two could be sharing the same backfield together soon. Speaking solely to the nine-time Gold Glove winner and his agent, it’s apparent Andruw Jones will be with the Braves through the entirety of the 2007 season.Braves general manager John Schuerholz isn’t saying anything to the contrary.
But at the same time, he’s maintaining his position of being tight-lipped about any potential trades that would include Jones or Tim Hudson or even Horacio Ramirez. Read On
Tuesday was a fun day for Josiah Pearson.
He was on Sycamore Elementary School’s televised morning announcements, he got to throw around a football with his classmates, and he rode to school in a limousine with Atlanta Falcons running back Warrick Dunn.
Josiah, 10, won the “Take a Player to School” sweepstakes, a program that allows students to bring a NFL player to school. Read ON
DeAngelo Hall will be facing Chad Johnson today and he states:
You don’t know how much stuff we blew in the Pittsburgh game, and you know me, I don’t like to look bad. I have been working all week. It’s going to be a battle. I mean a battle. says Hall
He is still embarrased about getting smoked by the slow footed one show wearing Hines Ward. He needs to step it up against Chad Johnson to bring back his crediblity.
Is this just a rumor. Could this be the decision to turn the team back into playoff contention?
“The Braves were heavily involved in the Joey Gathright deal and still could get him from Kansas City. Yes, they need a leadoff hitter, but there is the possibility that they will explore dealing Andruw Jones at the end of the season.” Hat Tip: MLB Rumors
Mother Nature put a damper on NASCAR Nextel Cup series qualifying at Atlanta Motor Speedway on Friday. Geez can this guy stay healthy, I can see why he was traded. Falcons gave up a 1st rounder for him. I’d be surprise if the Falcons can get him to play 3 more games this year.
Atlanta Falcons defensive end John Abraham will miss three to four weeks following surgery Tuesday to repair a torn lower abdominal muscle. The Falcons did not release details on the procedure, but coach Jim Mora said the torn muscle “is related to but not solely linked to” the groin injury that has limited the oft-injured three-time Pro Bowler to only two games this season. I’m afraid Bulldogs will catch another beatdown. What’s the best way to get over a loss? Yes it’s drink until you until you can’t feel the pain. Looks like this year the fans will get wasted before the opening kickoff. That way they really don’t know what happened.
UGA president Michael Adams wants to change the name and the AJC was looking for some suggestions
